What's new in Faculty Publications

115 references were added to Matas Faculty Publications in May.

This month we spotlight a tasty abstract from the Southern Regional Meeting of the American Federation for Medical Research by Drs. Chen, Monlezun & Harlan regarding preliminary results on the impact of Tulane's Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine

Chen Y, Monlezun DJ, Harlan T. (2014) "Recipe for improving chronic disease management: Personalized nutrition education for medical students via predictive multivariate regression models." Journal of investigative medicine. 62 (2): 555.

Investigators "sought to accurately map predictive factors for competency and attitude deficits in a large cross-sectional study." Basically, they wanted to know which knowledge, attitudes and dietary practices in medical students predicted their attitudes and abilities to council patients about nutrition and diet. "Our results indicate that nutrition education for optimal improvement in medical student competencies and attitudes in nutrition education for patients is most predicted by personal dietary habits followed by past nutrition education." Bottom line: students who have a personal dietary plan and have received nutrition education prior to medical school tend to be the most likely to advise their patients on nutrition and diet.

As a conference abstract, this particular work is not indexed in PubMed. We found it in EMBASE, another biomedical research database that indexes conference proceedings, reports and other gray literature in addition to PubMed articles. DMP Tool updates and changes

Thanks to a generous grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the DMPTool will be upgraded to a new and improved version on May 29th. This new version will give you increased functionality, such as the ability to add a collaborator with equal editing rights to your plan.

There will be a transition period in the middle of next week; rest assured that we will migrate forward all of your plans both in process and completed. We will have some downtime, however, on May 28th. Here’s what you need to know:

Prior to Wed May 28, 6:00am PDT / 9:00am EDT the DMPTool (Version 1) will remain available at <https://dmp.cdlib.org/>.

Between  6:00-10:00am PDT / 9:00-1:00pm EDT (4 hours) the DMPTool will be unavailable while we complete the first phase of the transition.

At Wed May 28, 10:00am PDT / 1:00pm EDT the old DMPTool (Version 1) will be available at available at <https://v1.dmptool.org>. You can continue to access and edit your existing plans, but you will not be able to create new plans.  The new DMPTool2 (Version 2) will be unavailable on this date as we migrate data and check that everything is working before the wide release.

At Thurs May 29, 6:00am PDT / 9:00am EDT the new DMPTool2 (Version 2) will available at <https://dmptool.org>.  All users and plans will have been migrated from Version 1. You can create new plans and edit existing plans in DMPTool2.  The URL <https://dmp.cdlib.org/> will point to information about data management at the University of California.  Formerly this pointed directly to the DMPTool.

Version 1 of the DMPTool will remain available at <https://v1.dmptool.org> for a limited time (approximately one month).   You can access and edit any plans you have already created, but will not be able to create new plans in v1; new plans should be created in DMPTool2. Any changes to plans in v1 will not be carried forward after May 28.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email the DMP Tool Team at uc3@ucop.edu.

New book spotlight: Handbook on health inequality monitoring: With a special focus on low- and middle-income countries

Added to the Matas library collection in December, the Handbook on health inequality monitoring: with a special focus on low- and middle-income countries is a user-friendly resource, developed to help countries establish and strengthen health inequality monitoring practices.

While the handbook was principally designed to be used by the technical staff of ministries of health to build capacity for health inequality monitoring in WHO member states, the handbook may also be of interest to public health professionals, researchers, and students.

One important feature throughout this handbook is the use of real examples from low- and middle-income country settings to explain and apply the main concepts. The examples primarily come from the field of reproductive, maternal, and child health.

This handbook was created so that individuals can become familiar with the steps of health inequality monitoring, and better interpret the vast literature available on the subject. In the text, you will find supplementary material alongside explanations of theoretical concepts to help familiarize you with the application and relevance of those theoretical concepts within low- and middle-income countries.

New custom PubMed filters for Evidence-Based Practice

Finding systematic reviews, meta-analyses, practice guidelines, clinical trials, and case reports in PubMed just got a whole lot easier.

Rudolph Matas Library has developed and incorporated custom filters in PubMed to help you find the evidence-based information you need quickly. Start at the Matas Library web site (http://matas.tulane.edu) and select PubMed@TU from either the search box or the Resources menu. After you search PubMed for your research topic, a list of custom filters will appear with your results. These filters will help you isolate systematic reviews, meta-analyses, practice guidelines, etc. from your list of results with a single click. A filter to limit results to the area of Toxicology (incldung environmental health) is also available.

In order to utilize these custom filters, you must access PubMed through the Rudolph Matas Library web site.

If you have any questions about this new PubMed feature or any of our other resources, please contact medref@tulane.edu.

Mobile Spotlight: Browzine Updates

Browzine, TU's literature surveillance app for your tablet, has several new improvements:

Subject Search - Users may now search to find a subject area of interest. This feature makes it even easier to discover, browse and read journals in BrowZine.

New Content - Recent additions to supported publishers and journals include: American Dental Association, Bloomsbury Publishing, Human Kinetics, MIT Press. Full list of supported publishers.

Did you know? Browzine can directly export journal information to RefWorks, but not EndNote. Here's why:
Why is EndNote not available as an export option? We appreciate that many researchers rely on EndNote and recognize the value of integrating with this service. However, our integration with EndNote depends on Thomson Reuters writing an API for EndNote and they have yet to do so.
Installing Browzine: Download the free app. When you launch BrowZine, select Tulane University from the drop down list. Then just log in with your off-campus credentials, i.e.: your email username (without the '@tulane.edu') and password.

How to find conference abstracts in EMBASE

Did you know? Embase not only provides full coverage of materials indexed in MEDLINE/PubMed, but also thousands of other publications, including conference abstracts. Now it's easier than ever to identify different publication types using Embase result filters. Check out this handout for more information.

More new features from Embase (via Elsevier):

More drug information

To better support your pharmacovigilance and comparative drug monitoring activities, a search in Embase now gives you easy access to information from PharmaPendium, including links to FDA/EMA approval and drug review reports and to preclinical and clinical observations and reported adverse events (AERs). Please note: Tulane does not current subscribe to PharmaPendium, so some features may be limited.

New data export options

In response to user demand, we’ve added the possibility to export filter data, opening up several new possibilities for analyzing data. For example, now you can now review the complete list of diseases found in combination with a particular drug search for possible new, undiscovered or under-investigated adverse effects.

Faster and easier access to data

We’ve made Embase faster and improved the design and accessibility of the search forms making it easier to identify and use available search options.
