Search Hint: Searching for Ebola in MEDLINE/PubMed
From the November 5th NLM Technical Bulletin, a search tip on ebola searches in PubMed:
retrieves all citations indexed with any of the Ebola MeSH headings as well as citations that have not yet been indexed but have that root string as a text word. Please be aware that truncation turns off Automatic Term Mapping and explosions in PubMed; however, with this search none of the Ebola MeSH headings have narrower terms at this time in their MeSH hierarchy, so nothing is lost by truncation.
- The simple PubMed search of:
- ebola*
The MeSH Vocabulary places the Ebola virus (MeSH: Ebolavirus) in the Organisms tree and the infection (MeSH: Hemorrhagic Fever, Ebola) in the Diseases tree. Indexing policy dictates that indexers coordinate the infection and virus when appropriate. In addition, searchers may be interested in the MeSH term Ebola Vaccines in the Chemicals and Drugs tree to find the literature on that specific topic.
Please also visit the NLM Information Resources for the 2014 Ebola Outbreak page.

Now available: Preparedness and Emergency Response Learning Centers: Lesson and Models journal supplement
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) (http://www.cdc.gov/) Office of Public Health
Preparedness and Response, in collaboration with the Association of Schools and
Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) (http://www.aspph.org/),
is pleased to present the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice
supplement entitled "Preparedness and Emergency Response Learning
Centers: Lessons and Models."
This supplement highlights practical examples of the work of the CDC-funded
Preparedness and Emergency Response Learning Centers' (PERLCs) toward improving
both the quality of and capacity for public health preparedness training and
evaluation for the frontline public health workforce. Its publication is
intended to increase awareness and understanding of the innovative methods and
training programs that have been developed, so that these achievements can be
extended more broadly and can stimulate additional innovations and programs for
preparedness training. The PERLCs, located at 14 Council on Education for
Public Health (CEPH) (http://ceph.org/)
accredited schools of public health, were established in 2010 and tasked to
develop, deliver, and evaluate core competency-based training and education
that addresses the public health preparedness and response needs of state,
local, and tribal public health authorities. Timed to be released with the
journal's September/October issue as a way to highlight National Preparedness
Month, the supplement showcases the PERLCs' valuable contribution toward
national health security and emphasizes the need for continued attention on
public health preparedness and response workforce development initiatives. The
PERLCs have collaborated with numerous partners, and the experience and lessons
learned from these partnerships shine through many of these trainings and
activities detailed in the supplement.
This supplement to the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice may be accessed through the Matas library's homepage. Enter the journal name into the search box under the E-Journals tab and select the link that pops up on the next page to access the journal's homepage.

What's new with Faculty Publications - Ebola edition
104 publications were added to Matas Faculty Publications in September, bringing the total citation count to 773 publications.
Of Note
Dr. Schieffelin |
Dr John S. Schieffelin, Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine & Pediatrics and
School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, contributes to three articles concerning the Ebola virus outbreak.
First, an editorial in The Lancet raises a call for more "small-scale, methodologically sound studies in west Africa for the treatment of Ebola." (1)
Next, a genomic surveillance study from Science examines the origins of the current Ebola outbreak, tracing it's roots to a likely divergence from central African lineages around 2004 and then manifesting in Guinea in February 2014, spreading to Liberia in March, Sierra Leone in May, and Nigeria in late July. The virus "has exhibited sustained human-to-human transmission subsequently, with no evidence of additional zoonotic sources." This is important because "many of the mutations alter protein sequences and other biologically meaningful targets, [which] should be monitored for impact on diagnostics, vaccines, and therapies critical to outbreak response." (2)
Dr Khan (Photo courtesy of Pardis Sabeti.) |
“I am afraid for my life, I must say…Health workers are prone to the disease because we are the first port of call for somebody who is sickened by disease.” His sister Aissata echoed the concern: “I told him not to go in there [the EVD Treatment Center], but he said ‘If I refuse to treat them, who would treat me?’”(3)
