Historical Book Spotlight: "Do You Want to Become a Doctor?" (1939)

 

This is a question that many students sitting in the Tulane Health Sciences Center have encountered at some point during their life (and may likely be considering again at this very moment).

Back in 1939, Dr. Morris Fishbein set out to give aspiring doctors information about the (then current) landscape of the medical field, along with issues that would be faced in the future.

Topics covered in this book include Medical Education Today, Preparation for Medical School, Cost of Medical Education, The Internship, The Specialist, On Beginning Practice, and The Future of Medical Practice. While written over 70 years ago, many of Dr. Fishbein's topics are relevant for aspiring and practicing doctors today.

Great American Smokeout this Thursday

This Thursday, the American Cancer Society will be celebrating the Great American Smokeout. The Great American Smokeout encourages smokers to use the day to make a plan to quit smoking, or to plan ahead to quit smoking that day.

According to the American Cancer Society:

Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the US, yet about 43.8 million Americans still smoke cigarettes — Nearly 1 in every 5 adults. As of 2010, there were also 13.2 million cigar smokers in the US, and 2.2 million who smoke tobacco in pipes — other dangerous and addictive forms of tobacco.

Tulane's Center for Wellness and Health Promotion (theWELL) provides a Tobacco Cessation Coaching Service for students, staff, and faculty. For more information about this program, visit theWELL.

New Book: "Out of the Shadow of Leprosy: The Carville Letters and Stories of the Landry Family"

Added to the Matas Library collection this past June, Out of the Shadow of Leprosy: The Carville Letters and Stories of the Landry Family tells the story of members of the Landry family and their time spent at the leprosarium in Carville, LA in the early part of the 20th century.

In 1986, the Carville site was renamed the Gillis W. Long Hansen's Disease (Leprosy) Center, and was moved to Baton Rouge in the 1990s. In 1996, the National Hansen's Disease (Leprosy) Museum was founded in Carville.

Mobile Spotlight: LifeArmor

Created by the National Center for Telehealth and Technology (T2), a component center of the Defense Centers for Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury, housed under the Department of Defense, LifeArmor is a mobile app designed to provide information on 17 topics of importance to members of the US military and veterans, including depression, life stress, mild traumatic brain injury, military sexual trauma, and post-traumatic stress.

Under each of the topic areas, four menu options are available for further information: Learn, which provides details about the topic; Assess, which provides an assessment in that topic area; Tools, which provide techniques to self-manage problems and symptoms in the topic area; and Videos, which provide testimony from members of the military community about their struggles and triumphs in the topic area.

LifeArmor is available for both iOS and Android. LifeArmor and other apps for military members and veterans, as well as for the health-care professionals who serve them, can be downloaded at the National Center for Telehealth and Technology (T2) website.
