Create maps, tables and reports with PolicyMap

PolicyMap is an online mapping tool that enables access to data about U.S. communities and markets. Use it for research, grant applications and impact analysis by creating custom demographic maps, tables, and reports.

What can you do with PolicyMap? Analyze communities at the neighborhood-level using data which drives Healthy People2020 goals/objectives.

Register for basic training webinars to learn how to create map elements: data layers, and data points to describe a geographic area. Trainers welcome phone calls: 1-866-923-MAPS (6277)

This blog provides ideas about creating custom maps and reports using data available via PolicyMap.

Check out this blog entry which demonstrates how 3 maps were created for a healthy food access project using data available in PolicyMap: food access, consumption and diet-related health indicators, and food assistance program participation.

What's new in Faculty Publications

Devices studied in "Effect of spectral transmittance through red-tinted rodent cages on circadian metabolism and physiology in nude rats." Daughty, 2013
137 references were added to Matas Faculty Publications in July, bringing the total citation count for 2014 to 592 publications authored or co-authored by our colleagues in the School of Medicine, School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, and the National Primate Center. Our scholarly output is on par with publication performance from last year. The final publication count for 2013 numbered 816 articles. As we pass the half year mark, we may well surpass last year's final publication count.

Featured publications from Pediatrics, Global Health Systems and Development, and Structural and Cellular Biology after the jump.

Tweet, post or like PubMed articles: social media icons now available at article level

PubMed entered into the 21st century today with the addition of social media icons to journal articles.

So now when you find that perfect article on Julie Dench's timelessness verified in a peer-reviewed journal, you can share it on Twitter, Facebook or GooglePlus.  Just check the bottom of the page in the Abstract view for sharing options.

Historical book spotlight: The Rudolph Matas History of Medicine in Louisiana, v.1 & v.2

In addition to being a celebrated surgeon, Dr. Rudolph Matas was very interested in the history of medicine and the history of medicine in Louisiana.

In 1926, Dr. Matas accepted the chairmanship of a committee to prepare a history of the Louisiana State Medical Society, and began the compilation of the materials needed. As he worked, he widened the scope of this project to include all material relative to the history of medicine in Louisiana, including materials from the times of French and Spanish colonization.

In 1953, unable to continue on with the project, Dr. Matas created a trust fund to fund the completion of this history. This history would be titled "The Rudolph Matas History of Medicine in Lousiana" and split into two volumes.

Volume 1 contains 3 parts: Louisiana Under France, 1699-1768; Louisiana Under Spain, 1769-1803; and The Transitional Period, 1804-1825.

Volume 2 contains 2 parts: The Ante Bellum Period, 1825-1860; and The Civil War and After.

Volume 1 Call Number: WZ 70 AL6 D87r v.1
Volume 2 Call Number: WZ 70 AL6 D87r v.2

iPhone apps from Wiley Current Protcols

Current Protocols is a resource of procedures and protocols for the lab. Whether it's  Immunology Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Mouse Biology, or Neuroscience, Current protocols provides step by step directions, ingredient lists and even videos for some techniques.

But that's not all. Current Protocols now offers three apps for iOS to increase your productivity in the laboratory:  Biological Buffer Calculator, CD Antigens Information Finder, and a DNA/RNA/Protein and General Molecular Weight Calculator. Click the link for more information in iTunes preview.

Biological Buffer Calc
Biological Buffer Calculator
Chemical/biochemical pocket companion designed by the editors of Current Protocols. Choose from a list of all of the commonly used biological buffer systems, enter your desired volume, pH, and buffer concentration, as well as the concentrations of your stock solutions of the conjugate acid and base, and the calculator will inform you of the exact volumes of these stock solutions to mix in order to obtain the buffer needed.

CD Antigens FinderCD Antigens Information Finder
CD molecules are cell-surface antigens identifiable by their reactions with specific monoclonal antibodies, which represent an important system for identifying and differentiating human cells. The CD Antigen Information Finder was adapted from Current Protocols in Immunology (Beare, et al., 2008. Monoclonal Antibodies to Human Cell Surface Antigens. Curr. Protoc. Immunology. 80:A.4A.1–A.4A.73) and includes data on the molecular weight, family, molecular structure, cellular expression patterns, function, and biomedical usefulness of the molecule. The database is searchable by the official CD designation of the antigen as well as by synonyms and other keywords including associated diseases and tissue/organ names.

DNA/RNA/Protein and General Molecular Weight Calculator
DNA/RNA/Protein and General Molecular Weight Calculator
Chemical/biochemical pocket companion designed by the editors of Current Protocols. Type in or copy/paste any nucleic acid base sequence, any protein or peptide amino acid sequence (in one- or three-letter codes accessible from a convenient menu), or any standard chemical formula, and obtain the molecular weight. Allows estimates of the molecular weights of unknown nucleic acid or protein/peptide sequences on the basis of sequence length and average base/amino acid molecular weights. Also includes a list of 1200 of the most commonly encountered organic and inorganic compounds, which may be immediately selected in order to calculate their molecular weights, as well as an easy-to-access list of the chemical elements, which may be plugged into any chemical formula.
