Welcome our new Educational Services Librarian, Elaine Hicks.

Elaine Hicks will be the Educational Services Librarian at the Matas Library of the Health Sciences.

Elaine received her B.S. from the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine at Southern Illinois University; her Master of Public Health—Community Health Sciences—from Tulane’s School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (SPHTM); and her MSLIS from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Most of her career has been spent in the Cook County (Chicago) Department of Public Health as Emergency Preparedness Education Coordinator and prior to that Director of Community and School Health Education. Her library and information science work experience has taken place in the University of Illinois-Chicago Health Sciences Library; the National Library of Medicine; the Medical Library of St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, IL, and the Health Learning Center of Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Since 2004 she has served on the Tulane University SPHTM Alumni Board; she is President-Elect of that body

Disaster Information Specialist Meeting - Thursday, July 15 at 12:30 CT

On Thursday, July 15 at 12:30 CT, the National Library of Medicine’s regularly scheduled Disaster Information Specialist Meeting will include a guest speaker from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) who will discuss the ongoing oil spill.

The guest speaker, Joseph “Chip” Hughes, MPH has been deployed since April to the Gulf region where he has been working with Coast Guard and BP officials as well as local and state officials, academic institutions and other federal agencies to provide worker safety training. He will share his insights on the ongoing situation and talk about the information needs related to the oil spill.

The Disaster Information Specialist monthly meetings are open to everyone and may be attended in person or by conference call. If you only want to listen in to hear the guest speaker, just sign off the call after that portion of the meeting.

Happy Independence Day Weekend! - Matas Library will Close for the Holiday


The Matas Library will Close for the July 4th weekend. The Library will reopen on Tuesday, July 6th at 8 am.

Reserve Books may be checked out on Friday, July 2nd between 3pm and 5pm. Reserve books will then be due on July 6th by 9am. Hourly fines will be charged for late reserve returns.
